Nachdem ich schon mehrfach auf die Sinnlosigkeit, ja sogar Gefährlichkeit der sog. “Kinderpornosperren” hingewiesen habe (und mich damit in guter Gesellschaft, wie dem CCC oder der Gesellschaft für Informatik befinde), ist ein Tag nach dem Beschluß des ersten Zensurgesetzes auch schon von politischer Seite geäußert worden, dass man weitere unliebsame Angebote gesperrt sehen will:
Heinrich Sievers, Leiter des Referats Glücksspiel im Hessischen Innenministerium, kritisierte die Internet-Provider scharf, die allein Access-Blockaden gegen Kinderpornografie einrichten wollen. Für Sievers kommt das Internet damit einem “rechtsfreien Raum” gleich. Um mögliche grundrechtliche Bedenken auszuräumen, empfiehlt Sievers den Providern, ihre Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen so anzupassen, dass sie ungesetzliches Verhalten unterbinden können.

I am having an internal intel graphics card of my tv-pc. After the update to ubunt 9.04 I just saw a "blue screen". Help: Link.

Ich habe auf meinem TV-Nebensteh-Rechner eine interne Intel-Graphikkarte. Nach dem Update auf Ubuntu 9.04 sah’ ich nur einen blauen Bildschirm. Ein Wechsel des libxine-Ausgabetreibers “xhsm” ergibt zwar ein Bild, ist aber zu langsam. Abhilfe schuf dieser Tipp.
GNU Smalltalk is there…

This is what I would like in that Smalltalk:
- A file based environment since this is what people are used to.
- A transcript / console you can run interactively from the command line / shell (like Lisp, Ruby and Python etc).
- A Web Development framework based heavily on Rails, since this is a leading framework and one that a lot of people are interested in. Sorry Seaside as you are great but sadly not great enough.
- An ORM framework like ActiveRecord. (EDIT: Apparently this is already available.)
- IDE support for Eclipse, IntelliJ and TextMate.
GNU Smalltalk is file based (it has an image but that can be recreated from scratch if wanted) and it has Seaside. Seaside is great I think, because it constantly wins web programming shoot-outs (in terms of code size, readability and coding time). It doesn’t have a “click-and-deploy” interface for web-apps, but I am confident that there will be one on day. GNU Smalltalk also has a decent command line interface (with readline support).
No Eclipse support for Smalltalk yet. But that’s funny, because IIRC: Eclipse is modelled after Visual Age for Java. Which is a Smalltalk program, adapted to Java, coming from… Visual Age for Smalltalk.
VMWare und ALSA

To be able to use sound in the VMWare player with an ALSA-Installation, you will need to install the package "alsa-oss" (or corresponding in your distribution) and set the sound device in your virtual machine configuration file to /dev/dsp.

Um Sound im VMWare Player mit einer ALSA unterstützten Soundkarte nutzen zu können, muss das Paket ”alsa-oss” installiert werden und das Sound Device in der vmx-Datei der jeweiligen virtuellen Maschine auf “/dev/dsp” gestellt werden.
Ubuntu (und OpenSuSE) und S-ATA Festplatten

I learned the hard way that Ubuntu (starting with at least 8.10) and OpenSuSE (since at least 11.1) do not recognize hard discs that are set to "compatible" in the BIOS. Switch the mode to "native" and you will be able to use your disc for installation and boot. If set to "compatible", the syslog reads like this:

Ich musste dieses Wochenende auf die harte Tour lernen, dass ein aktuelles Ubuntu (ab mindestens 8.10) und ein aktuelles OpenSuSE (ab mindestens 11.1) S-ATA Festplatten nicht erkennen, wenn diese im BIOS auf “Compatible” gestellt sind. Erst der BIOS-Modus “Native” erlaubt den Zugriff auf die Festpatte. Ansonsten findet man im Syslog Zeilen wie diese:

My savings bank advertised new interest rates: up to 3,25%! The catch: only for amounts that are higher than the account balance of 03/31/09. Everything else will be accounted with an interest rate of 1,75% - which is much less than before. Other than intended by marketing, I am going to cancel my account.

Die Tagesgeldbank meines geringsten Mißtrauens bietet jetzt sagenhafte 3,25% Zinsen – auf “jeden neuen Euro”. Konkret heißt dass, dass jede Summe, die den Kontostand vom 31.03. übersteigt mit 3,25% verzinst wird, der Rest aber mit 1,75%. Anders, als vielleicht vom Marketing gedacht, hat mich das nicht dazu gebracht, neu einzuzahlen, sondern mein Geld komplett abzuziehen. Auf den Arm nehmen kann ich mich selbst!

Kleinigkeiten geben den Auschlag – das Kopieren von Dateien vom USB-Stick will nicht in vernünftiger Geschwindigkeit funktionieren und der MSN Messenger weigert sich, in das Systray minimiert zu werden. Also… Ubuntu.
