I learned the hard way that Ubuntu (starting with at least 8.10) and OpenSuSE (since at least 11.1) do not recognize hard discs that are set to "compatible" in the BIOS. Switch the mode to "native" and you will be able to use your disc for installation and boot. If set to "compatible", the syslog reads like this:

sata_via 0000:00:0f.0: version 2.3
sata_via 0000:00:0f.0: PCI INT B -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 20
sata_via 0000:00:0f.0: invalid PCI BAR 1 (sz 0x3f6, val 0x1)
sata_via 0000:00:0f.0: PCI INT B disabled

Ich musste dieses Wochenende auf die harte Tour lernen, dass ein aktuelles Ubuntu (ab mindestens 8.10) und ein aktuelles OpenSuSE (ab mindestens 11.1) S-ATA Festplatten nicht erkennen, wenn diese im BIOS auf “Compatible” gestellt sind. Erst der BIOS-Modus “Native” erlaubt den Zugriff auf die Festpatte. Ansonsten findet man im Syslog Zeilen wie diese:
