Gerade ist “Hellphone” zuende gegangen, und ich ärger’ mich mal wieder, einen Film im deutschen Nachmittagsprogramm gesehen zu haben. Der Film an sich war nicht spektakulär. Spektakulär schlecht war aber mal wieder die Zensurschere, der Schlüsselszenen des Films zum Opfer gefallen sind. Schlimmste Stelle: Die Protagonisten kommen mit dem “Höllenhandy” in die Chemieklasse, um es dort mit Schwefelsäure der finalen Vernichtung zuzuführen. Was wohl nicht klappt – hier fehlen ein paar Minuten Film, in der nächsten Szene liegt ein Mann am Boden, die Chemielehrerin weg, die Klasse flüchtet (warum?) und die gesamte Schule scheint hypnotisiert auf das Klassenzimmer einzustürmen.

Aber warum (zum Teufel!)? Man weiß es nicht. Es bleibt zu vermuten dass es evtl. einen unschönen Säureunfall gegeben hat oder sowas.

Erinnert mich an die TV-Fassung von Starship Troopers. Man sollte einen Hinweis im Programmführer einführen, z. B. “Vorsicht – Jugendschutzfassung – Erzählung kaputtgeschnitten!”

Nachdem rundherum um Star Trek alles ausgelutscht ist (und Star Trek 11 ein kruder Versuch ist, das Konzept durch eine geänderte Zeitlinie wiederzubeleben), muss ich feststellen, dass SciFi-Serien meiner Meinung nach doch noch funktionieren, wenn auch nicht zur Trash-Prime-Time, wo uns so Schrott wie “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” oder “Germanys Next Topmodell” präsentiert wird.

Battlestar Galactica war, wenn man die Episoden am Stück am Wochenende geschaut hat total unterhaltsam. Stargate hat sich von einer low budget Serie zu einem eigenen Universum gemausert. Eureka ist witzig, abgehoben und spielt in einer geheimen Stadt in unserer Zeit. “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” hatte mehr mit einer Soap als mit SciFi zu tun und ist daran gescheitert (Beverly Hills 90210 für Nerds funktioniert einfach nicht). Doctor Who ist von einer Schaumstoff-Kostüm-Serie auch zu einem durchaus ernstzunehmenden Universum gewachsen. Torchwood… naja, ich finde, ein wenig zu “schwul”. Aber durchaus schauenswert.

Wer also behauptet, “der SciFi” ist tot, der bedauert aus meiner Sicht die Überkommerzialiserung Star Treks (und den Versuch, zuviele “politisch Korrekte” Themen unterzubringen) oder den grandiosen Unsinn den George Lucas auf die Leinwand brachte…

The Happening

Ich habe gerade The Happening geschaut, und musste überrascht feststellen, dass die Kritiken überwiegend schlecht waren. Also ich fühlte mich durchaus gut unterhalten, gerade, als ich dachte “was würde ich machen, wenn sich links und rechts von mir alle möglichen Leute umbringen?”.

Und so abwegig ist der Plot (“Pflanzen kommunizieren“) nicht. Aber dafür müsste man als Filmkritiker ein wenig Allgemeinwissen haben und das nicht unter “Ökogutmenschentum” verbuchen.

Dalvik Turbo VM von Myriad

Myriad will die Dalvik VM (der Java-Teil von Android) bis zu 3x beschleunigen (Videos). Das sind gute Nachrichten für alle Android User (sofern es die neue Virtual Machine auch mal in die ROMs schafft). Sollte die Entwicklung auf dem aktuellen Android-Source basieren, drücken wir die Daumen, dass es von Herstellern oder den Custom ROM Bäckern (zu denen ich auch gehöre, s. hier) gelingt, einen Backport für die veralteten Geräte (Samsung Galaxy, G1 – veraltet deswegen, weil die Hersteller bereits gesagt haben, dass ein Update auf neuere Android Versionen aufgrund der Hardware nicht möglich sei, was ich zumindest beim Galaxy bezweifeln möchte) zu erstellen.

Allerdings stehen die Quellen der Android Dalvik VM unter Apache 2.0 Lizenz – Myriad ist also nicht gezwungen, diese wieder zur Verfügung zu stellen. Deswegen ist es gut möglich, dass Myriad die “Turbo VM” exclusiv an die Hersteller (HTC, Motorola, Samsung, …) lizenzieren wird, was einen Backport erschweren, wenn nicht gar unmöglich machen würde.

Neulich, auf dem Gang.

Vorstand: “Herr Fritsche. Mein Unternehmen hat ein Problem. Wir geben zu viel aus, und nehmen zu wenig ein. An den Ausgaben kann ich nichts machen, wir brauchen einen neuen Springbrunnen für das Vorstandsbüro, dringend! Auch kann ich die Management-Prämien nicht kürzen, wo kämen wir da hin, wenn das sich herumspricht? Die Einnahmen können wir auch nicht ändern, wir haben gerade für unsere zahlungsunwilligsten Kunden, als Ansporn, die Preise gesenkt!”
Fritsche: “Aber natürlich, Herr Vorstand! Da ich ihr Haus schon ein wenig länger kenne, ist mir aufgefallen, dass verschwenderisch mit Büroklammern umgangen wird. Hier könnten wir sparen, wenn wir einfach weniger Büroklammern verteilen. Wenn wir Glück haben, kann man mit den Papieren auch lose umgehen”.

Klingt unrealistisch? Irgendwie schon. Der Vorstand würde geschasst werden, und Herr Fritsche hätte vermutlich auf lange Zeit sein letztes Beratungsmandat gehabt.

Sowas funktioniert nur in der Politik…

OpenVPN

Ah sweet! OpenVPN up and running again. The installation direktly on the router (dd-wrt) failed to work reliably. I set up the OpenVPN server on my linux home server (two servers, one on port 443 for http tunneling and one on 1194 for udp connections).

The servers have ip adresses 10.8.0.1 and 10.9.0.1. I adjusted the routing table on my router to route 10.0.0.0 via the linux server. The setup is pretty straightforward and well documented (german).

I installed openvpn gui on the windows client and made to configurations – one for the udp server, one for the http tunneled one. Changed stuff in the tunnel-config:

http-proxy 192.168.10.102 8080 creds.txt basic proto tcp

The user and login password are in creds.txt.

Todo: getting the client to run on my android phones.

VDR – zero byte recordings

It took me a while, but I finally found out, why my vdr wasn’t recording some channels. At first, I thought I had USB timing issues. Or buffers too small. Or a kernel that’s not a good fit for my Eee 701. Turned out I was looking in the complete wrong spot to solve my problem.

I created the famous “channels.conf” using the scan program from the ubuntu dvb-apps package (scan -o vdr). The program outputs the frequencies in kHz, where vdr expects Hz.

For instance:
Bayerisches FS;ARD:738000:C12D12M64B8T8G8Y0:T:27500:4929:4930=deu:4932:0:34:8468:3841:0

where VDR needs:
Bayerisches FS;ARD:738000000:C12D12M64B8T8G8Y0:T:27500:4929:4930=deu:4932:0:34:8468:3841:0

VDR is still able to tune in and stream via network (streamdev), so you can’t find the cause easily. It restarts constantly when trying to record though, creating 0 byte files.

Solution: login via SVDRP (“netcat localhost 2001″) and type “LSTC”. VDR outputs your actual channel information. Copy the output into an editor of your choice and delete the wrong lines, save it as “channels.conf” in your vdr configuration directory.

Tadaa… recording should work now.

Creating a patch android_2.6.27 vs. Samsung Galaxy

As you might have noticed (or not) I am working on my own custom Samsung Galaxy ROM called “Italy”. Right now, I am concentrating on the kernel. It looks like the devs over at Samsung (or their contractor) started from a rather outdated base of the android kernel.

To be able to include the drives for the Qualcomm MSM chip and board, I started various attempts…

First attempt: diff android_2.6.27 vs. Samsungs source. This wasn’t working, since the android 2.6.27 kernel has undergone some revisions, and the resulting patchset isn’t anywhere near to be called “Samsung additions”. It’s more one year of kernel development PLUS Samsung/ Qualcomm drivers. Unusable.

Second attempt: merge android_2.6.27 developments into the Samsung Kernel. Result: compiling and working kernel – yay!

Next step: create patchset from 2.6.27-44 (latest kernel.org download of 2.6.27) and android_2.6.27 – merge this one into the source mentioned at 2nd attempt: compiling and (mostly) working – yay!

Still, the changes from android_2.6.27 to android_2.6.29 are too big to be simply merged in. Let’s start over – every iteration brings more knowledge. Like, this time, the conclusion, that the Samsung kernel includes the “mem_notify” patch from early 2008 which is not used in any way as it seems. So before redoing the excercise, I will clean out those mem_notify patches to have an as-clean-as-possible base…

By the way, “meld” is a great tool for this purpose, you should take a look at it.

I gathered the mem_notify patches from the LKML mailing list archives, glued them together and created a reverse patch. Some of the changes got rejected (it happens all the time) but using meld, I can clearly separate out the mem_notify related changes and reverse them. The remaining big chunks are… deciding if a certain code change was introduced to support Qualcomm specific hardware features (for instance bluetooth poweroff, BCM4325 power controls) or if it’s just an evolutionary patch in android_2.6.27.

Oh, btw, I am not a kernel hacker – I admit I don’t even understand C except for a bit of code reading
